I like to Move It, Move it!
I’ve always been good at moving my body! I love to bike rides & hiking in nature as it's so peaceful. I attempted to roller skate but nahhh, LOL! That didn’t work out with me in the times that I was trying to learn it, so it never stuck, and I didn’t even attempt ice skating because I wasn’t trying to fall on my ass but maybe someday, I’ll try it out! There have been times where I slacked (as everyone does!) & was not productive in that way, but I quickly started to figure out what body movement(s) worked for me!
My movement journey began with dance at 3 years old and I did several types of dances. I was a ballerina, I did jazz, I did tap & hip hop. The memories are a blur but I’m sure I covered all the dance foundation basics. Dance was my heart until I got to my pre -teen years where I took a short break & went to competitive swimming. I wanted to switch things up! The breaststroke was my favorite in that sport, and my awards from it proved that! The butterfly though, was the death of me LOL. I didn’t have enough upper body strength to do the swimming style plus the idea of moving both legs and arms in sync was a lot of mind work at the time. After 3-4 years, during my high school years, I missed dance so much that I said no more swimming, I am going back to dance. But this time, I went and competed at various places with my team. The dance styles that we competed in as a team were Bollywood, Hip Hop, & Rock. I enjoyed it so much! When not in those sports, I was either at the park with my sisters playing with them or playing with them at home. When I first started working, I was on my feet constantly so that was a workout by itself. In the first two years of college, I walked everywhere to my classes. That freshman 15 didn’t stand a chance with me! I enjoyed that until I decided to finish out my undergraduate and graduate online to make more time for life experiences.
Fast forward to my time of being a health & wellness coach, during that time I learned a fuck ton and this season of life allowed me to explore other various forms of movement: yoga & Pilates being two of the main things. I learned how to listen to my body in various movements and how to trust in myself with more challenging movements. It gave me mental clarity & better quality of sleep. Not going to lie, at first, yoga and Pilates kicked my ass! I didn’t think that a low impact workout would make you stretch and move your body like that! But also because of that, I got addicted to it. Plus, it did and continues to do wonders for my spine curvature and allowed me to improve my posture over time.
Now I like to challenge my body in ways that I know I can handle it. I like to test to see what it can handle without making my spinal curvature worse. Pilates, dancing, & swimming have all challenged me in various ways from training my lungs in the water to seeing how long I can hold a certain pose or stretch. Even after years of not competing, I’m still a strong swimmer and a flowy dancer that can move her hips like they don’t lie! I hope this gives you inspiration to move your body because it’ll thank you!
Take care of yourself,
Nessa <3
